pitch black (2000). directed by david twohy.

shitty poster right? looks like a cheap sci-fi movie. you'll be surprised what is in store. however, this film is an example of the golden less-is-more rule. the film was shot on a very small budget in the middle of arid australia, there was no out of the world computer graphics; the moods and lighting were created using mere filters. but the story - as any good movies are - must have a story to tell - and the fancy graphics can come later.

the film is about a plane that crashed onto a deserted planet inhabited by cannibalistic bird like creatures who prey on people when it's totally dark, which marked the 22 years eclipse cycle. starring radha mitchell, vin diesel and cole hauser - this film has very good character build up and makes good use of vin diesel. he's no good playing tortured or emotionally sensitive people - but he is very good at playing tough macho men. i fell in love with his massive arms. there are muslim characters in the movie which is something new considering it was released in 2000, in a time where the world hardly know about muslims or islam in general.

  2. Vin Diesel makes a great anti-hero. IMHO, he is a subtle actor, who can convey a great deal with just a quirk of his eyebrow. (yes, he is swoon worthy, why do you ask?) Unfortunately, many of his films don't quite capitalise on that, happy to settle just on his biceps and testosterone action.

Yay to the Muslim characters! I like that they are well written to be pretty true to the faith.

It was dark and the ending was (to me) unexpected. Loved the movie.

  3. snuze: haha, by that definition, i guess the burden falls on the director in choosing what kind of actors work for a movie. keanu reeves, to me, is the best actor that could have played neo in the matrix :P

  4. I agree with you on Keanu as Neo! I get why people think Keanu is a wooden actor, but then again, he doesn't screamote like Pacino. It's just his style. I always felt that whatever roles he play, there is an honesty to it and that makes me enjoy watching him.

BTW, Naz and I are thinking of catching a movie sometime before fasting month kot. You game, bb?

No chick flicks, please. If Ima fork out money and risk my hearing in a THX theatre, I want explosions and derring-do!
